B.C. Farmer’s Sunflower Maze Raises $50,000 for Children’s Hospital – A Golden Field of Hope

When John Peterson, a third-generation farmer in Chilliwack, decided to plant 100,000 sunflowers on his land, he never imagined it would become one of British Columbia’s most beloved summer attractions.

Now in its third year, his 12-acre sunflower maze has drawn over 25,000 visitors and raised $50,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

A Labor of Love

John spent months carefully planning the maze’s winding paths, ensuring every angle was Instagram-worthy. Visitors pay a small entry fee, with 100% of proceeds going to charity.

“Sunflowers symbolize hope and happiness,” John said. “That’s what we’re growing here.”

More Than Just a Maze

The attraction now includes:

  • Evening “Sunset Strolls” with live folk music
  • Local artisan markets selling handmade crafts
  • A “Sunflower Selfie Station” for families

“It’s magical,” said visitor Priya Sharma. “My kids didn’t want to leave!”

Next Year’s Plans

John hopes to expand with a nighttime light display and more charity partnerships. “As long as people keep coming, we’ll keep growing.”
