In a world where bad news often dominates headlines, La Maison Douce, a charming café in Montreal’s Plateau district, is flipping the script. Their unique initiative, “The Happiness Brew,” offers a free coffee to anyone who shares a positive story or act of kindness.
A Simple Idea with a Big Impact
Owner Sophie Tremblay was inspired after a customer paid for a stranger’s coffee. “I thought, What if we made kindness the currency?” she said.
Since launching in January 2024, the café has given away over 2,000 free coffees, each accompanied by a handwritten note detailing the kindness shared. Stories include:
- A nurse who stayed late to comfort a scared patient
- A teenager who shovelled snow for an elderly neighbour
- A stranger who returned a lost wallet with $300 still inside
These tales are displayed on a “Kindness Wall,” where customers can read and add their own.
A Community Rallies Together
The café has also introduced a “Pay-It-Forward” board, where patrons can pre-purchase meals for those in need. So far, over 500 free meals have been claimed.
“This place feels like a hug in a cup,” said regular customer Claire Dubois. “It’s a reminder that good people are everywhere.”
